As the island streets grow quiet in December and the sea takes on its deep winter shade of blue, something unfolds at Korinjak that guests rarely get to see. There are no arrivals, no suitcases rolling over stone paths, no morning yoga sessions on the terrace. And yet, this is precisely when one of the most important parts of the year begins. Preparation. Quiet, methodical, shaped by care and intention.

The Christmas season here is not a pause, but a transition. A moment to reflect on everything that has been, while at the same time - almost imperceptibly - building what is yet to come. Because Korinjak has never been just a hotel. It is a community. And an experience created through the shared work of many people, different energies, and a common sense of belonging.

At the very heart of this experience is the permanent hotel team: reception, kitchen, housekeeping, and technical support - the people who form the backbone of the hotel’s everyday life. But the circle does not end there. The wellbeing programme is shaped by long-standing yoga teachers, meditation guides, gong masters, therapists, and walking guides, while each season also welcomes external collaborators from Croatia, Europe, and around the world. Each of them brings a new perspective, a different rhythm, their own story- and together, they leave a lasting imprint on the experience guests take with them.

Preparations for a new season, interestingly, begin even before the previous one comes to an end. Already during summer and early autumn, guests start reaching out to secure their stays well in advance, as do facilitators planning workshops and retreat programmes for the following year. This thread of continuity is never broken- it simply shifts in intensity.

Hotel Korinjak: Behind Closed Hotel Doors

Although the hotel is closed to guests during the winter months, a core part of the team works throughout the entire year. Wellbeing programmes are created and aligned, reservations are managed, communication with groups and workshop leaders continues, promotional content and campaigns are prepared, and the team takes part in fairs and events. At the same time, physical preparations of the space begin early in the year: thorough cleaning and refreshing of rooms and shared areas, arranging terraces and outdoor spaces, technical inspections, preparing the beach, and equipping rooms for workshops and programmes.

Every season brings something new. Sometimes it is a new programme element, sometimes a new collaboration, and at other times a construction or spatial improvement that subtly yet significantly enhances the overall experience. In recent years, a strong commitment to green transition has taken a central place in these preparations. Korinjak is a small, family-run hotel that invests its own resources, which makes every completed project a particular source of pride - especially when guests recognise these changes, support them, and enjoy the new developments together with the team.

Programme creation is one of the most joyful and creative parts of the entire process. A blend of established, trusted programmes and new content allows the offer to grow and evolve year after year. Many facilitators are long-term collaborators who return regularly, just like the many loyal guests. Over time, trust develops between people, place, and programmes, and some activities naturally continue and deepen.

At the same time, the hotel remains open to new ideas. Numerous enquiries arrive regularly for workshops and retreat programmes, and the intention is to give space to almost everyone who brings a clear vision and an authentic idea. This openness and inclusivity—the desire to support those who are just at the beginning of their journey - is one of Korinjak’s core values.

Programmes are not created by following trends, but by intuition, by listening to the space and the energy of the place itself. Interestingly, what develops intuitively at Korinjak often later becomes part of a wider trend. For years, almost unnoticed, they have been ahead of their time. The programme is never strictly defined in advance - it is the result of the synergy between the team and numerous facilitators. This shared creative process is what gives Korinjak its vitality, diversity, and authenticity.

The spirit of the team is perhaps best felt in moments behind the scenes. Every Friday evening, at the end of the week, a closing party is organised. A celebration co-created by guests, facilitators, and staff - anyone who wishes to share a part of themselves. These evenings are filled with laughter, music, and dance, but also with deep, honest emotional sharing. Moments that blur roles and create a genuine sense of home and belonging. For many team members, these moments are a powerful source of motivation.

Hotel Korinjak: Behind Closed Hotel Doors

During the preparation period, when there are no guests yet, energy is sustained in simple ways - through positivity, laughter, small moments of relaxation, and mutual support. Personal involvement in this process is deeply connected to the realisation of a vision. Every small goal, every new project brings a sense of growth, creative fulfilment, and joy. It is especially inspiring when an idea and vision truly come to life through the sincere enthusiasm of guests, colleagues, and team members.

Challenges, of course, are part of the journey. Running a hotel on an island requires a special way of thinking and living, along with constant improvisation. Faith in what is being created helps overcome obstacles, pushes boundaries, and tests resilience.

Throughout all preparations, the same philosophy runs as a guiding thread: listening - to guests, employees, facilitators, and all those who love Iž and the hotel. From countless ideas, each year those are chosen that enable growth, enrich the offer, and are financially sustainable. The hotel is a family business, investments depend on the results of each season, but every step - no matter how small - is experienced as a success and a confirmation of the path Korinjak has been walking for over twenty years.

A special moment that symbolises the beginning of a new season is the ritual of energetic cleansing of the hotel and all its spaces. This act, indispensable before the arrival of the first guest, is still carried out by the visionary who set the hotel on its holistic path 25 years ago - Ratko Vlahov. It is a moment of silence, intention, and new beginnings.

And what Korinjak wishes to pass on to guests in the coming season remains unchanged at its core: a sense of being special. The excitement of staying on the island of Iž. Joy and calm that slowly settle in and bring a smile - because there is no greater feeling than a satisfied guest whom you have, once again, managed to pleasantly surprise and truly delight.
